The school is located in an area of urban expansion in the city of Olhão, close to E.N. 125 and in an area densely populated with other primary and secondary schools and with easy access to the local sports facilities such as the swimming pool, the municipal stadium, the health centre and the sports hall.

The school is easily accessible via the main road and the building is nested in a large neighborhood; however, only the façade looks out onto the main street, which makes for a very safe and sheltered location.

The school building has been designed keeping a few fundamental factors in mind: a full maximization of natural light complemented with a lighting control system; a thermal and acoustic environmental comfort; the maximum use of outdoor spaces all around the building made easily accessible by multiple exits from within; a differentiation of spaces designed for the early, the primary and the middle school students; easy access to all communal areas for all member of the school community; the abolishment of all architectural barriers and the implementation of diversified playground equipment.

Colégio Bernardette Romeira was built around the concept of being as efficient as possible, a “green building”, thanks to the integration of means such as a bioclimatic architecture, water consumption reduction systems, self-sustainability through solar panels and eco-friendly materials (obtaining a category A+ in the sustainable building certification schemes on the market).
